Three Reasons Why My Computer is Running Very Slow – And how it Can Be Fixed

by Jason Coleman on July 11, 2009

My computer is running very slow, you say. You are probably wondering how you are ever going to get it to speed up without having to spend hundreds of dollars in repairs. There are ways to speed up a slow machine and get it running at top speed again without having to spend a lot of money.

In fact, there are 3 common reasons why your computer might be slowing down and none of them require a high-priced computer technician.

1. Spyware

Spyware is the bane of the Internet user. You can visit a website without downloading anything and have tracking cookies placed onto your computer. While these are usually minimally problematic, the programs that can install onto your computer without you knowing can cause all sorts of problems, from slowing your computer down to causing errors. Some might even come with malicious code that can threaten your privacy and your system’s integrity.

Download software (free and purchased are available) and scan regularly for spyware to clear it off your machine.

2. A Virus

If you have a virus on your computer, you’re lucky if all it does is slow your system down. Most leave you vulnerable in many ways so that someone else can pull information of your computer. Some are simply designed to make a system unusable.

Download quality virus scanning software and use it regularly. The best kind runs all the time to prevent viruses from getting on your system in the first place.

3. A Full Hard Drive

If you say, “My computer is running very slow” and a quick look at the properties of your hard drive shows it’s almost full, then it’s time to clear some space. Download a registry cleaner/repair program. Use the disk clean up and defragmenter that come with your computer. And don’t be afraid to delete programs you’re not using. The more disk space you have, the faster your computer will run.
