So you want tips for coloring your hair at home?
Here are some lessons learned (the hard way) that can make your home hair coloring experience a successful one. Giving you hair that looks like it was done by the best colorists money can buy! Even if it wasn’t.
The first lesson deals with how permanent you want the color to be. It’s really best to go with a semi or demi color your first time. Some dyes like this have no ammonia and others next to none so you’re less likely to wreak havoc on your tresses. Besides test driving a more temporary color, if you don’t like it, the color will wash out in a matter of weeks. Just be sure the product inside the box matches what you’re looking for in terms of permanence.
Try not wash your hair right before coloring it. But don’t go several days without washing it either. Washing right before might leave the shaft with moisture that would dilute the color. Not washing your hair risks product buildup with might inhibit color penetration.
Don’t go crazy when picking colors if you want your hair to look natural unless a shade of pink, purple or maroon has caught your eye. But a stylist would advise sticking within a shade or two of your natural color. Pointing out styles and color preferences change but the coloring agents stay pretty much the same.
Ability to color our hair isn’t something we’re born with, right? So read every word of the instructions. That way you’ll know how to apply the product to your hair correctly and for how long.
If you’re trying one of the new coloring products or one you haven’t used before, you want to be sure to find out how you’ll react, if at all, before you slather it all over your head. That’s right you want to do a sensitivity test just like the box says. Nothing like an adverse reaction to spoil an otherwise fun experience.
Newspaper is your friend when coloring your hair. Cover any surface the coloring can end up on including the floor, walls and countertops. Also adding a bit of corn starch is a smart way to thicken it just enough to keep if from flying all over.
Also, unless you want dye on the walls and ceiling of your shower, be careful when rinsing your hair. Trust me. You’d be shocked how far this stuff splatters.
Perfect. Oh wait. Dab some petroleum jelly on the back of your neck, your ears and at your hairline. You’re forming a barrier to avoid staining your skin with the dye. I’ve learned dazzling hair color can’t make up for obviously hair dye stained skin.
Keep a damp paper towel and baking soda close by to wipe up any dye that ends up on any unprotected skin.
It’s fun to change the natural color of your hair. Just don’t get carried away and color your hair too often. Otherwise you risk ending up with dry brittle hair from too much exposure to peroxide and other chemicals. Another lesson learned the hard way. Also condition and moisturize depending on the level of dryness.
Make a major coloring mistake? You need to make an appointment at your salon. Do not attempt to fix it yourself or call in your cousin to help with like a henna makeover. Most attempts at home remedies will only mess your hair up worse.
Is celebrity gorgeous hair color out of a box possible? In a word yes. If you follow the advice and lessons learned the hard way I’ve shared, a brand new you can be had for less than you thought. And for sure in less time and at a smaller price than if you have it colored professionally.
