Some Tips on Building Your Own Custom Desktop

by Beau Allerton on June 15, 2009

When it comes to desktop computers you have a couple of options. You can buy one from the store, or you can put one together yourself. But if you can just buy one, what are the benefits to putting on together on your own?

What it comes down to is that there are certain situations where a user needs to have certain needs that cannot be met by a store-bought computer. The problem is that building your own desktop PC is not necessarily an easy thing to do. But the benefit is that the user can decide exactly what they need in their computer in order to build the perfect PC for them.

One of the great flexibilities of a desktop PC is that you can decide what to install and what not to install. This customizability allows a user to truly define what they need. It could be that they need more RAM or hard disc space than a store model will give them. Or, maybe a user needs something more basic than they can find in the store. Either way, building a PC on your own gives you the flexibility to just get what you need and nothing more.

So where do you start if you’re going to build a desktop PC on your own? Well, a good place to start is the processor. Do you need a dual-core, or do you need something more powerful like a quad-core? Next you’ll want to think about your motherboard and memory. You have to find a motherboard that is compatible with your processor and memory. Since everything is attached to the motherboard it all has to be compatible. It is also important to get one that will allow for future upgrades.

Drive space is also an important part of desktop construction. If the computer is going to be used for large video files, sound files, or other design programs, the computer must include a large enough hard drive. But if the computer is going to be a gaming system, the rpms might be the more important factor.

There are also other consideration you can make such as peripherals. What kind of monitor do you want to have? Do you need to have any other special drives or connections? All of these things need to be considered when you build your own computer.

Most consumers will be able to get by just fine with a store-bought desktop. But there are always those people out there that need a specialized computer. When those times come up, building it on your own is a good option to go with.
